I found this recent article about a New York State Supreme Court case brought to the court by Warner Bros. Discovery, suing Paramount over their contract for the cartoon South Park’s exclusive rights. In 2019 Paramount and the South Park creators sold the exclusive rights to the first 23 seasons of South Park and three new seasons, each containing 10 episodes.
Warner Bros. paid approximately $1.7 million per episode to receive the exclusive rights until 2025. After this deal was made, the pandemic put a halt to the new season which was supposed to come out in March 2020. So far Warner Bros. has only received 14 new episodes, while it was promised 30 new episodes.
Besides that, the contract said that Warner Bros had the exclusive rights to streaming South Park, which it did on its platform HBO Max. Yet Paramount+ brought out two South park pandemic specials in September 2020 and March 2021. Warner Bros. believes that according to their contract, they had the rights to stream these episodes, not Paramount. The Court mentions another $900 million between MTV Entertainment Studios, a Paramount subsidiary and South Park Digital Studios for exclusive content.
Warner Bros. accuses Paramount, MTV Entertainment Studios and South Park Digital Studios of scheming and trying to boost the new streaming platform Paramount+. They claim over $200 million in damages over the deal with Paramount. Interestingly enough the South Park creators are not mentioned in the court case.
