Illegal Game Show Practices

On Tuesday, Sara, Faustine and I will be leading a discussion on the law surrounding game shows. We will begin with a game of jeopardy with questions relating to game shows, and then move on to a more in depth discussion on the central legal issues. The two main focuses of the follow-up discussion will be cheating, where contestants cheat without the game show’s knowledge in order to earn money, and rigging, where game shows intentionally feed contestants information in order to influence the outcome. Following a series of quiz show scandals, rigging was made illegal in the U.S. While these provisions prevent rigging quiz shows, it is not so clear if they prevent rigging reality competition shows (like Survivor or Big Brother). Here is a short article on the issue: https://www.rclawlibrary.org/blog/2022/08/illegal-game-show-practices-for-500/. Looking forward to next class!
